Introduction : - When we examine things, then we seek to explain why the things happened the way they did. We categorise this as cause and effect reasoning. The strong points behind any reason are known as cause and the impact of the cause is known as effect.
If an action or situation (A) has occured because of some other action or situation (B), then (B) is the cause of A.
Alternatively, (A) is said to be the effect of B.
These questions require that the given statemenats be classified either as "Cause' or 'Effect'. In order to do this correctly, the nature of the relationship that exists between the statements needs to be properly understood and identified. As, there are many different types of relations which can exist between the pairs of statements given, the following simple example is used to illustrate the point and help give a better understanding of the concept.
As per the analysis of last 3 years of CAST exam, it has come to the notice that none of the question based on this chapter was asked in the last 3 years. But from exam point of view, it is essential to cover all the topics with equal understanding as you never know whenever you will come across the questions based on this chapter in exam.
Rules followed in Cause-Effect Relationship : -
The cause will always occur before the effect. Hence, if two events are given, then the effect that which is chronologically antecedent to the other can only be regarded as a possible cause.
A necessary condition for the occurrence of a specified event is a circumstance in which absence of the event cannot occur.
A sufficient condition for the occurrence of an event is a circumstance in which presence of the event must occur.
Both the events express generalised results that may not be backed be any specific cause but may influence certain other factors.
The effects in both the given statements amy be caused or triggered by a third unmentioned event which may, thus be called the common cause of the given events.
In this type of questions, the candidates are provided with the statement which are associated with the probable cause or effect. The candidate has to determine using his logical skills whether the above statement is the cause or effect.
